A110 Berlinette

In production between 1963 and 1977 the A110 was a development of the A108. The rear-engine layout uses a steel backbone chassis that includes the front suspension crossmember and a rear ‘bridge’ to which the engine/gearbox and rear suspension mounts are connected. This is bonded into the fibreglass bodyshell resulting in a very rigid body-chassis unit.

All examples have coil spring suspension with most having double wishbones at the front and swing axles at the rear with the driveshaft running inside the axle tubes and disc brakes on all wheels. From the 1974 model year the 1600cc cars have double wishbone rear suspension.

Most A110 Berlinettes were built in Dieppe. Variants were also built under licence in Brazil (INTERLAGOS, 1962-1966), Bulgaria (BULGARALPINE, 1967-1970), Mexico (DINALPIN, 1964-1972) and Spain (FASA, 1967-1977). All cars are left hand drive and the A110 was never offered for sale in the UK. A total of 6813 A110 cars were built in France.

Through its production life there was significant evolution in power output with a number of engine capacities utilised in the French built cars  – 956cc, 1108cc, 1255cc, 1289cc, 1296cc, 1470cc, 1565cc, 1605cc, 1647cc with later competition specification A110s having engines of up to 1800c.

In competition the A110 was a very successful rally car in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The car won several rallies in France in the late 1960s and went on to win the inaugural World Rally Championship in 1973 having 1-2-3 finishes in the Monte Carlo rallies of both 1971 and 1973.
